My elderly mother was determined to stay in her house after my father died, although it might have been easier for her to move to a smaller, more manageable property. There were quite a few jobs she wanted done around the house though. As we live a couple of hours’ drive away, we’re not that handy to get things done. My mother is incredibly independent too, so she didn’t want to rely on us or other relatives.

When we bought a new house, we decided to hold onto our old flat and rent it out. Expecting our first baby meant that we were about to seriously outgrow our little one-bedroom flat.

I guess we hadn’t really thought about getting the flat ready for rental, and the estate agent said that we need to do a lot of work on it first. (more…)
