My parents have become real perfectionists as they have got older. I’m sure they weren’t like that when we were all growing up. Everything in their house has to be perfectly in place and matching and co-ordinated. It would have been impossible for them to be that fussy when there were four children growing up in the house! When one of their dining room chairs broke recently, they decided to get an exact replacement made. They didn’t want to buy a new set because they were worried they would not match the table. You never really notice how dirty your windows are in winter. Because the rest of the world is gloomy you presume that’s all you’re seeing through the dirt-encrusted glass. However, when you get a bit of winter sun and it can’t quite penetrate the muck, you know it’s time to get it sorted.

My windows hadn’t been cleaned for a long time. It was just something that was never very high on my priority list. I have to be honest, my house is not the cleanest place on earth. It’s tidy, and it’s not disgustingly filthy, but it could be more pristine, I have to confess.

So when my parents announced on a Wednesday that they were coming to stay on a Saturday it was panic stations all round as my housemates and I desperately tried to get the house into some sense of order before the royal visit (at least that’s what it felt like!)

We dusted and vacuumed until we could do it no more, and scrubbed the bathroom until we could see our faces in the floor, but despite all the hard work we could not get the carpets clean no matter how hard we tried.

I thought it might be time to call in a window cleaner when I realised that I couldn’t actually see my garden properly from the kitchen.

Sure it was a great aid to privacy as nobody could see in either, but a little bit disgusting at the same time.

We love our dog, but he is a huge Great Dane and makes a lot of mess.

I suppose we didn’t notice it much, but when we came to move house, my son told us that we’d have to get rid of the dog hair that had built up in the carpets and get them looking nice.

After a December that was colder than previous years and a January set to be worse the UK has found itself in the grip of bad weather, many northern cities like Manchester found themselves at the mercy of the elements, Manchester Airport for example had to be closed because of the large amount of snow, as well as many businesses.
