Since my dad died my elderly mum and her best friend Ethel have been inseparable. They do everything together – go to the supermarket, have a potter round Matlock, go out for lunch in Bakewell. Ethel has become more like a member of the family than a friend, especially as she has no family of her own.

When Ethel passed away my mum was devastated, it was almost like she’d lost my dad all over again. Because she was on her own, she didn’t really have anyone to clear the house, so mum and I decided to take on the task.
