When I was growing up my mum was a big fan of Ground Force, so it was on in the house all the time. Unbeknown to me it planted a love of gardening in me that would lie dormant until I was in my late twenties.

It re-emerged when I bought my first house. I was desperate for it to have a garden so I could potter about in it and make it look amazing. In the end, however, the house I ended up moving into had a big, but rather unruly garden. I used to see my parents getting excited about planting daffodil bulbs and things and think they were going off their rockers. Then I hit 40 and all of a sudden my garden became important to me. I suddenly realised that my garden was in a complete state. I couldn’t do anything with it at all.
