My mum had always been very strong and independent. She was well into her eighties before she gave up her car, and before that she could frequently be seen taking her friends shopping and helping them all out getting to the doctors and things.

After my mum died a couple of years ago my dad was really insistent that he wanted to stay on at the home they had shared for decades.

At the time he was still very able and capable of looking after himself so my brother and I agreed that it would be the best thing for him.

As my mum had always done all of the cooking and cleaning through their relationship he did have a fair amount to learn before he could be up and running by himself, so we had to give him a few basic lessons and then he was away.

Household finances are something which has always eluded me.

Maths never was my strongpoint, and when I try to figure it all out I either end up getting very confused and flustered with the whole thing, or I get angry and end up throwing the books and the calculator across the room in a rage. Neither are particularly effective ways to get the job done.

I have just started to take my little girl to a Father and Toddler group in Burton, where we live. I looked up activities for children and babies in Burton on the internet.

I think she was getting a bit bored just seeing my face all the time so I decided to arrange something for us to do a day during the week.  It’s great to see her interacting and having fun with other children. I’ve also found it really good too for socialising with the other fathers living in Burton. I have just re-located to Burton for a new job. There were a few law jobs in Burton going at the time of my epic search for a job. I really like the place and got a lovely place quite near to the Law Firm I am working in the centre of Burton.

The only thing was that I didn’t know a soul when I moved here; the only people I had met were the people interviewing me. You don’t get much of a chance to socialise or meet people with the hours I have to put in either.

I was really pleased when two of the lads from my work asked me for a drink after work. We went to a sports bar and had a couple of beers. They turned out to be a really good laugh and really down to earth. One of them is absolutely outrageous and certainly knows how to have a good time. They are single like me so I’m in good company.

We now go out a couple of times a week, just once during the week though. I can’t cope with the hangover the next day at work. It didn’t look good all three of us looking like death either.

My sister has been down a couple of times to visit me in Burton. She has met my new friends and thinks they are fabulous too.
